Faren Raborn was born in the small town of Houston, Mississippi, USA in 1953. The son of a Southern Baptist minister, his music experience began very early as a boy soprano in one of his father's pastorates. At the age of nine, be began piano lessons and, by the age of ten, was singing and playing piano for various church functions.
Until the age of 16, Mr. Raborn's musical experiences were limited to church music, but joining the high school choir of Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA soon changed this. He was introduced to choral works of classical composers which began a lifelong love of classical music. Participating in high school choir in Baton Rouge also afforded the opportunities to perform in honor choirs accompanied by the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra and to participate in numerous workshops with Dallas Draper, the Louisiana State University choral director at the time.
After graduating from high school, Mr. Raborn moved to Natchitoches, Louisiana where he began music studies at Northwestern State University of Louisiana, receiving the Bachelor of Music Education (Vocal) and Master of Music (Choral Conducting) degrees. During his tenure at the university he studied conducting with Dr. W. A. Hunt and Dr. Burt Allen . Voice teachers included Richard Cage, John Carpenter, Robert Ketchum, Colleen Davis, and Phyllis Sahadi. Although his emphasis was choral music, Mr. Raborn also continued to study piano with various teachers including Dr. Paul Torgrimmson, Dr. Ed Rath and Dr. Mary Galvan-Carroll.
Mr. Raborn's professional career has included numerous church music positions and several educational positions at both the public school and university levels. In the past few years Mr. Raborn has developed an interest in computer generated music and uses this technology for many purposes. An an accompaniment aid, he has sequenced the entire scores of "Damn Yankees" and "A Chorus Line" and used these sequences as orchestrations for theatre productions at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. He also uses sequences to accompany church and school choirs when additional instrumentation is needed that is not readily available. He finds this alternative much better than using cassette soundtracks because of the ability to maintain artistic control and not be limited by the cassette soundtrack.
Skills with computer generated music have led to a huge involvement by Mr. Raborn with classical music on the World Wide Web. In 1995 he created The Classical MIDI Connection, now one of the largest repositories of classical MIDI files in the world. Most recently his interests have turned to the popular mp3 format and the promotion of classical artists using the format. His association with MP3.com has led to the creation of " the GROUP ", which is a consortium of more than a hundred classical musicians banded together to promote their music as well as classical music in general. His is recognized as one of the most listened to classical artists on the internet today with more than 700,000 listens via the internet in the past year.
