The CMR Spotlight
Jun Nishio

Jun Nishio was born in Nisshin-city, Aichi Prefecture, Japan on September 17, 1968. He is a graduate of the Nagoya Daiichi High School and Chubu Technology & Culture Vocational College, where he studied electrical engineering and computer science. He is presently employed by a printing company in Japan.

Jun is largely a self-educated musician. At age 16 he took his first piano lessons, and subsequently taught himself score-reading, orchestration and composition. In his original compositions, he credits such diverse musical influences as Gustave Mahler, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky, Toru Takemitsu, Steve Reich, Miles Davis, Bill Evans and Ruichi Sakamoto. " I believe that there is much value to be found in almost any type of music, whether it be classical, jazz, rock or techno-pop."

In addition to piano, Jun also took up the trombone, and became a member and conductor of the brass band at his high school. He relates that when conducting , he often encountered difficulties with some of his fellow band players whenever his ideas clashed with theirs. "Many of them had the attitude that they were playing this music for pure enjoyment, yet they were not willing to put forth the extra effort required to give a good performance. But I had a much higher regard for the music, and desired to do it justice." Not winning immediate acceptance as a conductor, Jun decided to turn to MIDI sequencing, a format which has allowed him to have the absolute artistic control he desires. "What's nice about MIDI is that it is a superb conductor every time. With careful data editing, the possibilities seem limitless!" The result has been quite gratifying, both to him, and to the thousands of people who have enjoyed his music-making on the Internet.

Jun's ambitious sequences to date include Debussy's La Mer, Ravel's 2 piano concerti, Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain and Rimsky-Korsakoff's Scheherazade. He achieved this miracle of sound using Roland SC-55mkII, Roland SC-88VL and Korg 01/W FD synthesizers, a Power Macintosh 8500/150 computer, and OPCODE Vision3.03J MIDI software. He is currently working on Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde.
